My accent

Ever since I moved to Ohio nearly two years ago, certain people have commented on or made fun of my (apparently) Wisconsin accent.

At least I haven't lost it. Thanks to Liz for posting this quiz.

What American accent do you have? (Best version so far)

Northern

You have a Northern accent. That could either be the Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland/Buffalo accent (easily recognizable) or the Western New England accent that news networks go for.

Stuck in Dallas with nothing to do but blog ...

I guess it took an unexpected overnight stay in Dallas to begin posting on "All Things Amy" again. I do apologize for the lengthy break I took and want to reassure my few loyal readers that it wasn't because I've lost interest in blogging or fallen off the face of the earth. I have just been so insanely busy of late that when I get home in the evening, I haven't felt like posting.

For longtime readers of mine who know all too well the "fun" times I have when flying, here's yet another story to add to my travel annals.

I had a 4 p.m. flight out of Denver this afternoon, which was delayed for a half hour because of mechanical issues. With the delay and losing an hour due to the time change, I missed my connecting flight to Columbus. But what really galls me is that I and a few other people were five minutes late to the gate and the airline didn't hold the plane for us.

The woman at the counter asks if I would like to be routed through another city. I say "Are there any flights going anywhere in Ohio tonight?" No, she says. "Well," I say, "then I guess I"m stuck here until tomorrow then."

She was making jokes with me and I know this wasn't her fault, but I was so not in the mood. She also asked if I wanted a window or aisle seat, to which I did sarcastically reply "I don't really care, just get me on the first flight back to Columbus." Who would have thought those words would ever come out of my mouth?

So here I am in a hotel in Bedford, Texas blogging when I should be in bed since I have to catch a 6 a.m. shuttle to the airport for a (hopefully) morning flight back to Columbus. So much for sleeping in and the relaxing post-conference day off I had planned.

The conference I'm speaking of is the Special Libraries Association annual conference in Denver and in happier news, I'm happy to say I had a wonderful time. It was great catching up with all my friends old and new, including Amanda, j, Brianna, Betsy, Amy R. and Sara.

I also got to spend a lot of time talking with my former boss, which was really special to me because I miss working with him so much. I'm very grateful that he let me talk his ear off over the last few days.

I enjoyed the Sunday night opening session with former Vice President Al Gore and Scott Adams' (creator of "Dilbert") presentation was hilarious.

I got a fair amount of public speaking under my belt at this conference, including moderating a session on the future of news libraries and introducing my good friend j at a Tuesday night awards banquet at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.

I'm really lucky I've been able to attend four straight conferences. They reenergize my passion for news librarianship and reconnect me with colleagues who understand the joys and concerns currently facing us.

Now, I must go to bed and try to get a few hours of sleep before it's back to the airport again. Fun times.

On the phone tonight, I told my dad I was going to move back to Madison, get a job at Menard's (a home improvement store) and never fly again. If my flight is delayed tomorrow, I will book the next plane to Madison and fulfill that threat.

Safe travels all.

* Addendum: My flight to Columbus this morning was early getting in and I sat next to a very nice woman who gave me her bag of Fritos because I guess she could tell how hungry I was with 24 hours of nothing but a muffin, bag of pretzels and a glass of OJ.

The airline did lose my luggage, but a very nice but strange man just brought it to my door, so all is well now.
