James Dean death anniversary

I couldn't let today go by without noting that it's the 50th anniversary of actor James Dean's death.

The first Dean film I saw was "Rebel Without a Cause." It was one of the titles I was required to view for a film class I was taking as part of my undergraduate studies.

From the moment James Dean appeared on the screen, I couldn't take my eyes off him. I don't know what filmmakers mean when they say a particular actor or actress has the "it" quality, but whatever "it" is, James Dean had.

Movie buzz

I've been hearing great things about the the upcoming (slated for release in November) Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line." I just watched the trailer and was blown away at how Joaquin Phoenix has nailed Cash's mannerisms and singing style. (Phoenix did his own singing and learned how to play the guitar for the role.) Can you say Oscar nomination?
